Energy Saving Tips for Your Home from Our Handyman
by Kelly Edwards | August 13th, 2009
Our handyman is at it again, this time to give us tips on how to save energy in our home, including some things we’ve never thought of. Now, we plan on running a winterizing segment here in October sometime, but until then here are a few little handy tips direct from Daven.
1. On your water heater you will see a red knob labeled VACATION. When away, simply turn your water heater on vacation mode to save gas on heating your water while your gone.
2. If your still running your air conditioner, the brush and foliage should be cleared at least two feet away from your air conditioning unit outside. This will save on the energy it takes for your unit to work properly.
3. Invest in window film for your windows. They are cost effective and energy efficient. Like some people say, these are like sunglasses for your windows.
4. Remove any old caulk and weather stripping from around the windows and replace it. By sealing any air leaks you can also prevent any water damage, especially in the fall when the weather starts to change.
5. Unplug your appliances when your not using them. Even when their not in use, appliances still consume energy. If possible, invest in energy efficient appliances. There are tax credits you can get for purchasing Energy Star appliances.
6. If you don’t have one already, invest in an programable thermostat. This will allow you to set a timer and regulate the temperature of your home.
7. Landscaping is a great way to control your air conditioning bills. Trees and bushes act as as natural shade and really beat the summer heat.
8. Go to www.energystar.gov to check out the tax credits you can receive by making your home more energy efficient. Checking out this website is worth the energy!!
