Recipe for Rehabbing Your Rental

Renters… you CAN make your home look and feel more like a home. Truth is, I rent and my place is so comfortable and cozy that sometimes I don’t want to leave. So much so that we’ve been in the same place for over 6 years! That’s a Christmas miracle. I used to be a serial mover. Here are some of my favorite rental refreshers that will leave your place feel like you own it. These projects may need a little more elbow grease and time, but trust me, it’s well worth it!

Buy furniture for the long haul.

Invest in classic pieces that will look good in 10 years. Long gone are the days of the uncomfortable futon or the hand- me-down sofa.

Paint the kitchen cabinets.

Of course you need to check with your landlord first, but chances are you are doing him or her a favor.

Change out your flooring.

A while back I discovered Allure flooring at Home Depot. Since then, I’ve used it on 3 of my rental projects and it’s amazing. It looks like hardwood flooring, sticks to itself so you wont ruin the floor below it, and its easily removable.

Change the mini blinds out for curtains.

The first thing I did when moved into my place is replace those horrible vertical blinds with curtains. It made a world of difference.

Opt for better lighting fixtures.

Nothing says “rental” like the 1980’s ceiling fan or the light fixtures with horrible bulbs. Changing them out will completely transform your space! I’m a firm believer that your home is only as good as your lighting. **Remember to check with your landlord first, ALWAYS hire an electrician and find a home for the lighting you’re replacing so you can reinstall it when you move out!
